Education - Case Studies (The University of Liverpool)
An installation story in four parts
When The University of Liverpool contacted Advanced Showers it was with an air of cynicism. They needed to upgrade the showering facilities across several halls of residence and were concerned that the solution may be elusive.
Lady Mountford and Morton halls had been providing one shower cubicle per 18 students and it was clear that the facilities needed to be upgraded. It would be necessary to make the best use of existing space by converting a number of other facilities including kitchens to provide three cubicles banked together with appropriate drying areas.
As Bob Dutton, Project Manager indicated.
"We certainly wanted something more robust than tile and tray but with such narrow corridors and entrances to the shower areas over 3 floors it was clear that a one piece unit of any description could not fit. In discussions with Advanced Showers we originally thought that a three section cubicle would do the job but as is the case with many of our residences corridors are narrow and there is often very little turning space to position the cubicles. When a four section solution was offered then the possibilities opened up as this solution overcame the manoeuvrability problems we were facing".
Having demonstrated that there was a product that was fit for purpose, The University of Liverpool was aware that other criteria were very important. Over the years it has been obvious that leaking shower cubicles create untold damage not to mention mould and grime resulting in escalating maintenance costs. The solution needed to last at least ten years, be maintenance free and be attractive in appearance. Oh and of course would be guaranteed leak proof.
The product chosen was the roomy 750DX which fitted into the available space perfectly. Although the three cubicles are banked together each cubicle has its own door with a drying area in front of the cubicle.
3 cubicles were fitted side by side in a designated shower room on a trial basis and following on from the necessary appraisals within the University, Advanced Showers won the contract to supply the units complete with bi-fold doors during the summer of 2006. Awarding the contract was based on Advanced Showers ability to meet short lead time and exacting delivery schedules. In all, one hundred and seventeen shower cubicles complete with bi-fold doors have created thirty nine new shower rooms complete with drying areas. Not only will this enhance the facilities for the students but will make the residences more attractive for summer letting.
As Bob Dutton commented:-
"We were working to very tight deadlines and needed to supply our fitting teams in an orderly fashion. We built up a strong working relationship with Advanced Showers, which gave us the confidence that we would complete the project on time and on budget. We will certainly be considering them for future projects of this nature."
